How do moms' and babies' moods influence each other over time?

The bond between a mother and her baby is one of the most powerful connections in nature. We often talk about how moms soothe their little ones, but any parent can tell you that the influence goes both ways—a baby’s big milestones bring us immense joy, while a difficult afternoon can leave us feeling drained.

Dr. Gibb’s Mood Institute at Binghamton University is currently looking for local families to help them explore this dynamic through the Binghamton B.E.A.R. Project (Babies’ Emotions, Attention, and Relationships).

Study Details & Participation

The Mood Institute is seeking moms with babies between the ages of 6 and 12 months for a year-long study.

  • Timeline: Visit the Binghamton University campus once every 3 months for a year (5 visits total).
  • The Session: Each visit lasts about 1.5 hours. You and your baby stay together the entire time.
  • Activities: You’ll complete questionnaires and an interview, followed by a few minutes of play with your baby and simple computer tasks for the little one.

Perks for Your Family

Earn $250: You will receive $50 cash at each visit, plus a small gift for your baby! ($250 total for completing the full study).

Stress-Free Logistics: Enjoy a dedicated parking lot with all parking costs covered by the institute.

Designed with Moms in Mind

The team at the Mood Institute knows that life with a baby is unpredictable. They offer:

  • Sibling Care: Childcare is typically available for older siblings in a designated toy room (please provide advance notice).
  • Flexibility: Easy rescheduling if your baby is having an "off" day.
  • Comfort: Private spaces for nursing or pumping and a changing table on-site.
