Six Stories of Fun! Discover the FREE Treehouse in Ithaca

Cayuga Nature Center is home to Treetops, a 6-story treehouse in the woods

Looking for a fun, free, and slightly adventurous day trip about an hour from Binghamton? We recently took a drive to the Cayuga Nature Center in Ithaca, and we have to tell you about the amazing, hidden gem: Treetops, a six-story treehouse!

Who knew such a massive, unique structure was tucked away in the woods? It's the perfect stop on a sunny day, especially if you're already planning a visit to other Ithaca family favorites like the Sciencenter or the Museum of Earth.

Explore Treetops: A Six-Story Wonder

Built back in 2000 by students from Ithaca High School, this is not your backyard treehouse!

To get there, you'll head to the Cayuga Nature Center (1420 Taughannock Blvd. Ithaca, NY). After you park, go through the gate on the left side of the building and follow the gravel path for less than a quarter-mile. Suddenly, this enormous, six-story wooden structure appears in the woods! You’ll cross a footbridge to enter, and the adventure begins.

Sky High Fun

While you shouldn't expect sweeping views of Cayuga Lake (you are deep in the woods, after all!), the interior is pure fun for kids.

  • Up and Down: The kids will love racing up the stairs and ladders, and finding all the little nooks and crannies to explore. We watched a group of kids timing themselves repeatedly to see who could conquer the six stories the fastest.
  • Unique Features: The different floors offer new perspectives and are a blast to explore. (Just a friendly warning: for those of us a little nervous about heights, you might want to keep the little ones away from the suspended rope netting areas where you can see between the floors!)

More Than Just a Treehouse

The treehouse can be an adventure on its own - or just a piece. The Cayuga Nature Center property boasts 100 acres of woodland, an old field overlooking Cayuga Lake, and more than 5 miles of walking trails.

Right next to the treehouse, running through the gorge, you can spot Denison Falls, a 20-foot waterfall. During our recent visit, it was more of a trickle since the area hadn't received much rain, but on a wet spring day, it’s a beautiful sight!

Plan Your FREE Visit!

This is a neat destination for both kids and adults.

  • Location: Cayuga Nature Center, 1420 Taughannock Blvd. Ithaca, NY.
  • Hours: Open daily from dawn to dusk.
  • Pro Tip: Pack a picnic and make a day of it! It’s an easy side-trip when visiting other Ithaca attractions.

Get ready for an adventure that reaches new heights!
